Testimonials from eTime Entrepreneurs

The Taste of Determination

In March 2004 Selena, Louisa and Rannia got chosen to enter an entrepreneurial challenge at a new computer school called eTime. At eTime you can do computing courses that have plenty of updated mac software.

There were two teams entered from Fendalton school, one girls team (us) and a boys team. The idea of the competition was to inspire children to come up with a creative product and present their work in an iMovie. The boys came up with a creative idea of an Info Roll. The boys did well and managed to come first in the competition and each won $150 course at eTime. We were determined to get their share at e Time as well.

Our product was a chocolate bar called Top Choc that enhanced sporting ability as well as lowered cholesterol rates.

It was clear that we would not have enough money to got to the course we wanted. So if we were to fund-raise we decided it needed to have some link to our original product chocolate.

After a lot of hard thinking we came up with the idea of making our own Top Choc. Unfortunately that idea didn’t work because the taste of the chocolate we made wasn’t what we anticipated. We ended up selling Cadbury’s delicious fund-raising chocolate.

We had calculated that if we sold 360 bars of chocolate we would cover 1/3 of the cost of the courses. eTime said they would sponsor 1/3 and that left our unlucky parents to cover the final third. When the first boxes were sold we thought hard about the risk of ordering another lot of 360 bars of chocolate. Could we do it? If we could we would cover the total costs. It was going to be another month of hard selling of chocolate, but we decided to take up the challenge. Now we had to get our act together and go back to selling chocolate to the public. This meant taking up our weekends at sports grounds selling to kind parents who wanted to buy some.

The course we wanted to attend was the one once a week. We could take a day off school to attend it. After most of the chocolate was sold our wish finally came true. Now we knew what entrepreneurial success felt like!! We drove off thinking of the day ahead.
